New Zealand, here we come again…
It has been some 3 year since we were in New Zealand. And that time it was only in the Northern Island with a base in Auckland. For this reason, we have not planned to spend too much time in Auckland anymore. Anyway, as we like Auckland a lot, we did spend at least some 3-4 days in here.
As we sent our sleeping bags home from Kathmandu and we wanted to do this roadtrip without booking.com or arbnb, one of the main tasks was to equip ourselves with some camping gear (tent, new sleeping bags, mats, cooking pots, …). The very initial plan was to rent a camper van in Auckland, but the availability and prices were just bad. No wonder when we came in the high season and have not prepared this well up-front.
We rented a simple car loaded the gear and set up for a round-trip around New Zealand. This time focusing much more on the Southern Island.
When I was buying the drone I was really looking forward to flying in NZ a lot. To my disappointment I found out that NZ just recently implemented a new regulation that basically makes it impossible to fly anywhere without a prior approval from the land owner. And that applies to public spaces as well. With that I would have to work with authorities in each part of NZ.
While some cities / regions see the stupidity of this regulation, they give you a blank approval to fly in their areas. Of course you have to follow the remaining normal regulations (airport zones, people privacy etc…). The only time I was about to try and fly it a bit was in a park in Auckland. As there were people everywhere, I did not even turn it on. So in the end, the drone stayed nicely packed for the whole month.
The next few photo gallery posts will cover some of the stops on this journey plan:
We left Auckland direction East to the Coromandel, Hot water beach and Cathedral Cove. The Hobbiton Movie Set (Matamata), Lake Taupo, Tongariro (Mount Doom area), Wellington, Picton, stop at Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Twizel area / Mount Cook area, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Milford Sound, Fox Glacier, Franz-Joseph Glacier, Lake Mapourika, a long drive to Abel Tasman NP and finishing the Southern Island in the awesome Marlborough wine region (staying in Blenheim).
The rest was just a boat ferry back to Northern Island and a full day drive to Auckland to return the car. We stayed few more days in Auckland making a day trip to Waiheke Island which was our last stop before flying to South America.
